A first for IEMA accreditation

Magnox has become the first company in the country to achieve accreditation across a multi-sited organisation with IEMA – the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Magnox South on behalf of Magnox Electric, led the development of the Professional Development Scheme for environmental professionals. It is unique in being open to all environmental staff, not just graduates. Read it all..

Wylfa returns to service after another successful outage

Wylfa’s Reactor Two returned to service this week, following the successful completion of its biennial outage to carry out maintenance and inspection work.

This year’s outage began on 9th April, lasting 135 days and involving almost 160,000 man hours and utilising the services of 28 contractors to deliver the work which is essential to the continued safe operation of the site. Read it all..

National Skills Academy for Nuclear launch welcomed

Magnox South joined forces with over 175 nuclear employers to support Skills Minister David Lammy and Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks in January as they marked the official launch of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN).

The Academy is the culmination of over four years work and will assist nuclear employers to tackle current and future skills requirements. Its network of regional centres, supported by a main base in Cumbria, will develop and accredit ‘centres of excellence’. Such centres will deliver training and respond to specific skills gaps identified by employers. Read it all..

WANO Technical Support Mission

Dungeness A and Sizewell recently hosted a WANO TSM (World Association of Nuclear Operators Technical Support Mission) focused on systems engineering.

The WANO team consisted of experts from French and German nuclear plants with an experienced team leader from WANO Paris Centre. Read it all..

NVQ success celebrated

Part of Bridgwater College, near Hinkley Point which houses the Magnox South Decommissioning Skills Centre at Cannington, was the location for a special event recently, when the chairman and chief executive of EnergySolutions, Steve Creamer, flew in from America to present certificates to the company’s first achievers of the City & Guilds Nuclear Decommissioning NVQ Level 2. Oldbury Receives Decommissioning Consent

Oldbury has achieved a major milestone in the site’s lifecycle, having received consent from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) to decommission the site.

This is the second of two key permissions required for decommissioning and is the culmination of nearly three years work by staff.

As part of the process, Oldbury was required to set out the measures it will take to ensure decommissioning has a minimal impact on the local environment. Read it all..

First fuel elements removed from Chapelcross reactors

Magnox North’s Chapelcross site began the next phase in its life this week when final de-fuelling of Reactor 1 commenced.

The first fuel element was removed from the reactor core on Monday 18th August, beginning the active commissioning of the newly upgraded fuel route. Approximately 40,000 fuel elements will be systematically removed from all four reactors and dispatched for reprocessing at Sellafield Site in Cumbria. Read it all..
