01 October 2008 NDA News
Following an extensive programme of work between BERR, the Regulators, NDA and Magnox Electric Limited, Magnox was formally separated into two nuclear licensed companies on 1 October 2008. This final stage of Magnox restructuring supports the strategic plan for restructuring the nuclear industry published by NDA in 2005. The two new companies are Magnox South Limited and Magnox North Limited that manage the Magnox fleet of reactors on behalf of the NDA. The companies are owned by Reactor Sites Management Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary or Energy Solutions (EU) Limited.
In mid August the Office for Civil Nuclear Security (OCNS) published its Annual Report ‘The state of security in the civil nuclear industry and the effectiveness of security regulation’. The document can be found at this link.

As previously announced, engineering solutions have been developed to address the BCU issue at Hartlepool and Heysham 1 power stations and allow the Reactors to return to service at full output.

During the 1980s and 90s, the nuclear industry in the UK was a firm target of the environmental lobby. Nuclear energy was seen as dirty, an opinion greatly strengthened by the events at Chernobyl. However, as the environmental and scientific communities became concerned that carbon emissions could be presenting a greater risk than any nuclear legacy, the industry is now seen as having to play a substantial role in minimising the country’s carbon footprint. Thus, the nation’s nuclear generating capacity needs to grow beyond its past peak of the 23% share of the electricity market that was reached in 1998. Read it all..
