Dungeness A has successfully tackled two of its most significant hazards as part of the NDA’s prioritisation process for major hazard reduction.

The work falls under one of the NDA’s strategic priorities, which is to drive hazard reduction across all Magnox sites and it has introduced the prioritisation process to implement this.

To enable sites to demonstrate they are addressing this, the hazards posed by wastes on site are quantified into a Safety and Environmental Detriment (SED) score.

SED is calculated by assessing the radiological and chemical hazard of potential waste, building integrity, nature and condition of waste and the environmental impact (electrical usage).

Dungeness A site had two high scoring items of plant; the turbine hall and the hydrazine plant. The turbine hall was the most hazardous item of plant on site and the ninth most hazardous building in the Magnox fleet. Following final review and the replacement of the exterior cladding, glazing and drainage the building is now ranked 23 in Magnox South and number seven at Dungeness A.

As the hydrazine systems have been removed from the building the associated risk has also been eliminated. This is a clear sign that staff and contractors are making a concerted effort to improving site safety and security.

Mark England, Site Director said “I would like to thank all staff and contractors who have assisted in lowering our SED score on site. It is with the efforts of all staff that we can manage this site safely.”

In line with the completion of the major hazard reduction associated with the turbine hall cladding the new plant area handover procedure has been signed, handing control of the turbine hall cladding back to site Infrastructure. John Maundrell, Site Infrastructure Manager, officially signed the certificate of ownership on 10 November 2008.
