Sellafield Ltd has started a campaign to recruit around 60 graduates for 2009. The campaign is set out to attract new talent in science, engineering, maths and business roles.

Following research that included interviewing recent graduates and focus groups with key stakeholders, the approach that will be taken is to advertise the vacancies mainly online, using Google, Bebo and other well recognised sites.

A number of careers fairs have been attended at specially targeted universities.

Jackie McClintock, Graduate Recruitment Manager, explained that, for the first time, the services of an external organisation – The Big Choice – were engaged to assist with some of the fairs. They generated lots of interest by running a competition to see who could construct a Chinese puzzle called a Tangram in the shortest time. This was a big success and created huge interest in the company and the roles on offer.

Candidates who apply and meet the shortlisting criteria are invited to undertake aptitude tests, telephone interviews and the final part of the selection is the assessment centre. A key part of the recruitment is the use of Sellafield Ltd’s assessors who are trained to a high standard before attending the centres.

Successful graduates are then invited for site visits and meet their new line managers and colleagues.

There is a strong graduate community on the site who also make contact with the new recruits to organise social events as well as answering questions on the important things such as where are the best pubs in the area and where’s the best place to live.

This strengthens links into the organisation for the new recruits and the early appointment of a buddy makes the transition
