mod_logoIt has been reported that the MOD is under scrutiny for radioactive leaks from nuclear submarines over the last 5 years. This has been revealed in documents released through the Freedom of Information Act. In 2004, 2007, and in 2008 radioactive coolant from nuclear submarines has been reported to have leaked into the Firth of Clyde.

SEPA the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, said in a recent press release:

“At a civilian installation we could be considering suspending certain activities until improvements had been made in the essential equipment, operating procedures and training to prevent a recurrence of an unauthorised release.”

”We have not said, as has been implied, that we would have closed HMNB Clyde if we had the regulatory power. What we have said is that for the protection of the environment it is essential that the management of HMNB Clyde operates to the same high standards that would be expected were they regulated.”
