magn_logoWarrington Based Magnox North Ltd has been awarded a prestigious RoSPA Gold Occupational Health and Safety Award, for the first time as a new organisation.

Magnox North, whose head offices are in Daresbury, operates 5 nuclear power stations (on behalf of their owner – the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority) which are at various stages of their lifecycle. Hunterston A and Chapelcross in Scotland and Trawsfynydd in North Wales are in the process of being decommissioned, whilst Wylfa on Anglesey and Oldbury in Gloucestershire are still safely generating electricity.

All these sites have been recognised on numerous occasions for their outstanding occupational health and safety performance, but Magnox North as a whole is now being recognised for the first time – just a few months after the organisation was established in October 2008.

Environment, Health, Safety Security and Quality Director, Keith Spooner said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this award which recognises our outstanding performance and our commitment to continuous improvement.”

He added: “Magnox North has maintained an exemplary safety record which is on a par with the best in the world, in terms of time lost due to accidents or injuries to our workforce. This achievement is compounded by the extremely difficult and often hazardous work we carry out in operating and decommissioning the UK’s first generation of nuclear power stations.
David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager said: “Magnox North has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well being of its employees and others. Entering the RoSPA awards reinforces the message that good health and safety is good for business and clearly demonstrates an organisation’s dedication to improving.”

Magnox North, and the various sites, will be presented with their awards at an event in Birmingham on the 13th May
