WindscaleThe Windscale site at Sellafield has transferred from the Infrastructure Directorate to the Decommissioning Directorate – in a move which will encourage more integrated working between the two.
Ahead of the move members of the Windscale Piles Decommissioning Project Team visited the top of the B6 Pile 1 chimney. The walk and talk tour of the facility was arranged by Geoff Carver, decommissioning senior project manager, and his team. The visit followed informal presentations and discussion regarding the challenges facing the two project areas. Windscale communications manager, Fee Wilson said: “The move into decommissioning will be hugely beneficial – the Windscale site would seem to fit naturally into that directorate and the opportunity for our people to work with their new decommissioning colleagues will help strengthen delivery across the projects. “The potential benefit of this kind of collaborative working has already been demonstrated with the visit, which was an excellent way to ensure the effective integration of the Windscale team into Decommissioning.”

Tony Carrigan, head of the piles decommissioning project, said: “Chris Wilson and I are very grateful for all the support Geoff Carver and his team are giving us. “We all hope to hold further regular information sharing workshops and we have invited Geoff and his team to visit the Piles Reactor Buildings in the near future.”

This change is the first in a series which will take place over the course of the next two years with the intention to ultimately bring about the complete integration of Windscale and Sellafield sites under one Nuclear Site Licence and one management system.
