edf-logoEDF Energy welcomed the publication today of the CBI’s Energy Report which provides an independent assessment of the UK’s prospects for low-carbon, secure, affordable energy.

The report analyses the impact of the current energy policy framework on likely investment decisions, and the impact these decisions will have on energy bills and climate change.

Chief Executive Vincent de Rivaz said:

“EDF Energy welcomes this thorough, independent assessment of the existing energy policy framework by the CBI.

“The recommendations from the CBI for a more a balanced approach are clear. We strongly endorse the conclusion that a diverse low carbon generation mix, with contributions from nuclear, renewables and fossil fuel with CCS is essential to our future.

“We are pleased that the CBI chose to tackle the difficult issue of how to encourage low carbon generation. We fully support the proposal to set up a joint Government-industry task force on this, which we would be happy to contribute to in any appropriate way.

“Action is required now in order to maximise our ability to hit our carbon targets in the most affordable way for UK consumers.”

“We are confident that the Energy White Paper to be published soon by Government will pave the way for a robust carbon price. In this context the Copenhagen Summit in December will be extremely important.

“A robust carbon price is important to the delivery of low carbon electricity generation, including our plans to build four new EPR nuclear reactors in the UK, with the first operational by the end of 2017.”

The UK Government has kept open the option of introducing further measures to reinforce the operation of the EU ETS in the UK should this be necessary to provide greater investment in low carbon generation.
