Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the Environment Agency are encouraging senior executives throughout the nuclear industry to become ‘Environmental Leaders’.
The two organisations recently hosted the Environmental Leadership conference in Manchester with the aim of sharing and promoting best environmental practice throughout the nuclear industry.
Senior executives from the nuclear industry and its regulatory bodies attended the conference, including representatives from the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), British Energy, the Nuclear Directorate of the Health and Safety Executive and SEPA.
Delegates considered what high level environmental leadership means, and what a company needs to do to achieve best in class environmental performance.
They also looked at how to incorporate environmental best practice into business processes and sustainable design, as well as discussing the NDA and Environment Agency expectations of the nuclear industry.
All attending organisations were asked to commit to at least one change following the event.
Ed Mitchell, Head of Business Performance and Regulation for the Environment Agency, who this year were recognised as the “greenest public sector organisation” by the Sunday Times, is addressing the conference and said: “This is a great opportunity to reach senior managers who have the power to make a real difference to the environment”.
“As an industry we need to make sure we are achieving the best possible result for the environment, as well as minimising the impact we have on it as a result of our day to day operations.
“Talking to one another and sharing experiences across the industry is an excellent way to learn from one another, and contribute to achieving better results in a shorter space of time. “
