Westinghouse Electric Company will team with a consortium of The Shaw Group (NYSE: SHAW) and the U.K. construction firm Laing O’Rourke as the constructor for the pursuit of new nuclear plant business in the United Kingdom.

The selection of this partnership to work with Westinghouse followed a formal and detailed analysis designed to ensure that the Westinghouse team will be best positioned to win contracts to deploy AP1000™ nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom in a timely, economical and efficient manner.

Ricardo G. Pérez, sr. vice president, Westinghouse Nuclear Power Plants, said the selection of Shaw and Laing O’Rourke is based on a number of factors, including the strong relationship Westinghouse and Shaw have built over decades of mutually beneficial and supportive work in the commercial nuclear power industry.

“Teaming together to provide AP1000s in the United Kingdom will enable us to build upon our success in China, where Shaw and Westinghouse are working together to bring the first of four AP1000s on line in 2013,” he said. “We are also teamed with Shaw to provide no fewer than 14 AP1000s in the United States, including six for which EPC contracts have already been signed.”

Westinghouse and Shaw have been working together since the mid 1950s when the two companies were instrumental in building the world’s first commercial nuclear power plant using a pressurized water reactor in Shippingport, Pa., near Pittsburgh.

Mike Tynan, Chief Executive of Westinghouse in the United Kingdom, said the inclusion of Laing O’Rourke in the construction consortium is consistent with the Westinghouse “Buy Where We Build™” approach to business.

“Laing O’Rourke is not only the largest privately owned construction company in the United Kingdom, it is also one of the most respected in the global construction industry,” he said. “The addition of such an experienced U.K.-based company, and access to its existing U.K. supplier base, will certainly add value as we build AP1000s in the United Kingdom in a manner that is truly beneficial to all parties.”

In the United Kingdom, work scope for the Shaw / Laing O’Rourke partnership will include engineering, procurement, construction and construction management.
