The Nuclear industry’s two major companies Magnox North and Magnox South are to reintegrate after just 2 years as separate companies.
Magnox Electric Limited separated in October 2008 to create Magnox North which runs Oldbury and Wylfa sites including three others and Magnox South which runs Berkeley and four other sites, and they expect to re-merge by the end of this year.
The NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority) is under pressure to reduce overhead costs caused by today’s economic climate to reduce spending. The merger will also imply that there would not be a need for two headquarters or two sets of board of directors and could therefore be high on the agenda in reducing costs. It is also recognised that information systems and resources can be easily shared or pooled to reduce these costs further.
This merger also means a need for one nuclear licence and therefore plans to re-licence to a Single Licence Company (SLC) will be imminent and subject to regulatory approval, this could be in operation later this year which falls in place with the merging plans.
