Chapelcross defuelling project hits milestone

Magnox NorthMagnox North Chapelcross’s decommissioning programme hit a significant milestone this week as the 50th Flask was safely shipped to the Sellafield Site in Cumbria for reprocessing.

 

Following formal permission to start defuelling from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) in July 2009, and the first element being removed from the reactor core just over a year ago on Monday 18th August 2009 there has been consistent progress made with the defuelling programme at the Chapelcross Site. First fuel elements removed from Chapelcross reactors

Magnox North’s Chapelcross site began the next phase in its life this week when final de-fuelling of Reactor 1 commenced.

The first fuel element was removed from the reactor core on Monday 18th August, beginning the active commissioning of the newly upgraded fuel route. Approximately 40,000 fuel elements will be systematically removed from all four reactors and dispatched for reprocessing at Sellafield Site in Cumbria. Read it all..
