Cogent, the UK skills council for the science-using industries, has today announced further funding to support the training and development of 355 female employees across the UK Sector through its Women and Work programme.

Cogent’s successful bid into the Employer Investment Fund (EIF) which is managed by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) will mean enhanced career development for those who take part. Read it all..

University of Cambirdge work with industry to educate nuclear leaders of tomorrow

Some of the biggest companies and organisations in the nuclear industry are lending their support to a new course which will prepare the engineers and scientists of tomorrow for incidents such as those recently witnessed in Japan.

Despite the recent, unprecedented events at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, global nuclear investment appears likely to continue after a period of careful consideration of the lessons that need to be learned. In the UK, the Government has commissioned a review.

Babcock, the UK’s largest nuclear site management, engineering and support services organisation, has committed to implementing the Nuclear Skills Passport (NSP) across its activities in the UK, supporting the National Skills Academy for Nuclear in the launch of the scheme. Babcock’s managing director Nuclear, Roger Hardy, sealed the agreement in a meeting today (Thursday 17 March) with the National Skills Academy Nuclear’s chief executive Jean Llewellyn, when he signed the NSP Company Charter. The innovative employer-backed Nuclear Island skills project is being moved to the next stage following a successful funding bid by Cogent and Imperial College London to the National HE STEM programme.

This will see the immediate development of a Nuclear Island module developed in partnership with Imperial College London in association with universities across England and Wales. A trial will take place in June, with a view to roll out next Spring. Read it all..

The Safety and Reliability Society recently celebrated thirty years as the professional institution for safety, reliability and engineering risk management practitioners in all industries. The Society also relocated offices during 2010 to new premises, and is now pleased to announce a change of logo.
